Abstract:
The aim of the BIOLICHT project is to develop environment-friendly materials to be applied means of transportation. By using light materials in vehicles the environmental burden during the service life (fuel consumption)can be reduced. Also, by using a so-called integral chain analysis it is possible to compare between different production methods, based on the environmental burden in different phases of the chain. The chain analysis was carried out by means of an environment-oriented life cycle analysis (LCA) for which use has been made of the so-called Eco-indicator 95 method. In this study the environmental impact of the total life cycle (production, usage and scrap phase) of a spoiler, applied in transportation vehicles, is assessed. The LCA of fiberglass composite spoilers is compared with natural fiber composite materials. Both materials are based on the Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) production process. 25 refs.
