Abstract:
Temporary gas radiating heaters were installed in Alkmaar's 'St.Laurenskerk' (St. Lawrence's Church) in the winter of 1998/99, in addition to
the existing floor heating, to be used during events. Because the application
of gas radiation heaters is being considered as a permanent solution for the
thermal comfort problem in the church, the city of Alkmaar commissioned ECN
to investigate the effects of the functioning of the heaters. The main
concerns are comfort, energy use, and possible negative effects of this type
of heating on the building (and the organ). A detailed image of the interior
climate of the church was obtained by use of infrared photographs, hourly
measurements of air temperature and humidity, comfort measurements and
infiltration measurements
