Abstract:
Due to recent increased attention for a possible transition to a hydrogeneconomy, the need is felt to include a detailed description of a
hydrogen system in a bottom-up energy system model. This paper describes
the set-up of an extension of the MARKAL model of the energy system
of Western Europe developed at ECN. In it, the elements of a hydrogen
economy are summarized. For many of these, a rather straightforward
implementation is possible. For some, additional assumptions have
to be made before they can be included in the model, as the way in which
technologies in MARKAL are parameterised had less degrees of freedom than the technologies require. Such assumptions can be made completely outside of the model, or through definition of complementary technologies be internalised.
