Abstract:
The penetration rate of renewable-based electricity has a large impact on not only the electricity generation and transmission market across Europe, but also on the gas market. The price level of CO2 emissions influences the choice of fuel in the electricity generation market in de short-term (the dispatch) and the long-term (investment). This report summarises Susplan research into the implications of the interaction between electricity market developments and gas market developments for trans-national network development. Key drivers assessed are the deployment of renewable-based electricity generation across Europe, differential load developments, and the role of gas in the electricity generation sector. The applied methodology is characterised by a scenario and simulation model based, quantitative approach. This report discusses the main results, draws some conclusions and identifies a number of recommendations for policy-makers.
