Abstract:
The nitric acid industry in the Netherlands is a major industrial source of nitrous oxide (N2O), an important contributor to the greenhouse effect. The project aims at determining the feasibility of the use of a catalyst developed by ECN for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of N2O with propane in a nitric acid plant. The project is a joint effort of ECN and Stork Engineering Consultancy in cooperation with DSM and Hydro Agri. The catalyst has been shown to be successful in removing N2O from model flue gases of a nitric acid plant at both atmospheric pressure and higher pressures. In both cases the total costs are in the range of 5 to 6.5 Dutch guilders per ton CO2 equivalents removed. This makes the method for N2O destruction cost effective compared to other measures aimed at the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
