Abstract:
In the face of an escalating electricity demand, Peru faces a shortage ofcapital to invest in the necessary increase in power generating capacity.
Meanwhile, a substantial and cheaper resource exists in terms of improvements
in the existing and future use of electricity. The title study illustrates
this with the proposed replacement in Peru of one million incandescent bulbs
with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). The volume evaluates the conservation
potential of one million CFLs for managing the rapidly increasing electric
energy and peak demand in Peru. The analysis is undertaken from the viewpoint
of the national economy, the consumers and the utilities. The studies
indicate that the potential benefits are indeed very large, but can only be
realized when CFL programmes are carefully formulated and backed at high
level by all actors involved. 10 figs., 17 tabs., 11 refs., 3 annexes
