Abstract:
The destruction of plutonium is most effectively done in a fuelconsisting of plutonium mixed in a non-fertile matrix. Several matrices have
been proposed and the characterization of the (mostly ceramic) materials is
subject of worldwide research, e.g. within the framework of the EFTTRA
program (Experimental Feasibility of Targets for TRAnsmutation). Besides the
materials behaviour upon irradiation in nuclear reactors, the reactor physics
behaviour of these new fuels is studied, because this may be quite different
from that of ordinary fuels due to the absence of uranium. In 1996, a
benchmark was defined by PSI to quantify the uncertainties related to the use
of non-fertile fuels. In this report the ECN contributions to these
benchmarks are presented. Wherever possible, extra data and comments are
given to explain the results obtained. 25 figs., 24 tabs., 6 refs.
