Abstract:
This report, prepared for the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER), presents facts and figures on nuclear energy to enable a discussion on the role nuclear power in the transition to a sustainable energy supply for the Netherlands. The report covers a number of issues relevant to the subject. Facts and figures on the following issues are presented:
- Nuclear technology, safety and security (including non-proliferation and protection against terrorism).
- Environmental aspects (including greenhouse gas emissions of the nuclear energy lifecycle).
- Nuclear power and the power market (including impact of nuclear power on electricity market prices).
- Economic aspects (including costs of nuclear power and external costs and benefits).
- Policy issues (including sustainable development).
- Social acceptance of nuclear energy.
- Knowledge infrastructure for nuclear energy in the Netherlands.
- Nuclear power in long term energy scenarios for the Netherlands and Europe.
Using two long-term energy scenarios the report also presents a social impact analysis of an increasing share of nuclear power in the Dutch electricity supply.
