Abstract:
The land availability for biomass has been analyzed as part of theassessment of several biomass related aspects. An overview is given of the
issues influencing the availability of land for bio-energy and material
purposes. The issues taken into account are land use trends, the agricultural
policy of the European Union (EU) and trends in consumption patterns and
productivity. The land availability prospects for the EU and EFTA are
analyzed within two scenarios. The first scenario is 'sustainable driven' and
the second scenario is 'technology driven'. Also a high and low meat
consumption scenario have been distinguished. Land availability in 2050 is
between 0 and 26 million hectare depending on the chosen scenario. 19 refs.
