Abstract:
We present a survey of the Dutch greenhouse horticulture sector, with an emphasis on developments that have an impact on energy use. The production of cut flowers, vegetables and (potted) plants in Dutch greenhouses is highly optimized and energy-intensive. Greenhouse heating and CO2 fertilization are prevalent and there is a growing use of assimilation lighting. We give an overview of government policies aimed at improving the energy efficiency of greenhouse farming and discuss energy efficiency measures that have already gained a considerable market penetration. We also consider innovative technologies that can be expected to play an important role in the period until 2020.
