Abstract:
To determine the fate of heavy metals and PAH emitted on motorways, it isessential that the actual size of the airborne particles in the vicinity of roads is measured. When the size distributions of the emitted aerosol are known, atmospheric dispersion models can be used to calculate spatial patterns of concentration and deposition from the emission estimates. In this report an inventory is presented of available techniques for sampling and/or sizing of aerosol and of available atmospheric dispersion models. Reconnaissance measurements are performed of the concentration and size distribution of aerosol and spray at the A2 motorway near Abcoude in The Netherlands. A research strategy is proposed to determine the dispersion of these traffic emissions, based on available instrumentation and models and the reconnaissance measurements. 7 figs., 3 tabs., 7 refs.
