Abstract:
In the village Weurt (municipality Beuningen, Netherlands) an increasedincidence of cancer was found. Therefore, a survey to assess the quality of
the ambient air was carried out during 4 weeks in the months January and
February of 1997 in Weurt and Nijmegen-West. The public health aspects of the
air were compared with a similar region (Nijmegen-Oost). The results are
presented in a separate report. The maximum permissible concentration was not
exceeded for any of the materials that were measured (benzene, formaldehyde,
PAH, Cd, Be, Cr, Ni, As). Differences between the average concentration for
the metals, formaldehyde and benzene were not significant. Only for specific
PAHs (emissions from traffic) the concentration was higher, although not
alarming. Measurements should be carried out for a longer period to determine
the total burden of air pollution in Weurt. It is recommended to determine
the averaged monthly concentrations in both locations for one year. It is
also recommended to take 48 daily samples in the location Weurt in order to
be able to trace more precisely possible sources. The samples must be taken
in the year that averaged monthly concentrations are determined and the
sampling depends on meteorological conditions. 3 figs., 1 tab., 9 refs.
