Abstract:
For the renovation of a laboratorium building at ECN (Netherlands EnergyResearch Foundation) in Petten, Netherlands, a facade was added in which PV
and sunshades are integrated in an innovative manner. The PV facade will be
financially supported by the European Union and Novem. In order to limit the
risks concerning construction and daylight effects as much as possible,
computer simulations were carried out by TNO-TUE in the design phase. After
that a mockup was made of one facade section and measurements were carried
out. An account of these measurements is given in a TNO report, included in
this document and providing an evaluation of the test arrangement. An
important lesson may be drawn from this project. Such large-scale and
innovative PV integration projects, involving large investments, should be
tested using 1:1 scale models. In this way risks can be reduced and possible
disappointments avoided. Although computer simulations and visualisations can
provide important information, they cannot take the place of the experiences
gained in the making and subjective evaluation of the test model
