Abstract:
Solar cells can produce electricity directly from light. This is calledsolar electricity. At the beginning of the project the price of solar
electricity was too high to be used for large-scale electricity generation.
The aim of the project was to develop a technology for multicrystalline
silicon solar cells and modules that will result in a price for solar
electricity which is half that in 1997. This cost reduction will be
obtained by increasing the cell efficiency and by developing an easy
module technology.
ECN, TNO and TU/e developed new processes in their laboratories and
these processes were evaluated at the former Shell Solar Energy B.V.
on larger scale. The obtained processes have resulted in solar cells
with a 20-25% relatively higher efficiency and a new and simplified
module technology, the so-called Pin-Up Module.
