Abstract:
Due to the growing interest of the application of biomass and wastestreams for energy production, relevant properties of these materials are
being determined at many places. At present, existing standard procedures for
mineral and solid fuels are used for the characterization, although it is not
clear whether these procedures are fully applicable for biomass and organic
waste. There is a need for information on the basis of which the supply,
storage and conversion of biomass can be assessed and designed. Furthermore,
there is a need to start up international standardization and normalization
of biomass and waste to be applied as bio-fuels. Within the title project the
following objectives were formulated: (1) to establish a list of properties
by means of which biomass materials can be characterized and evaluated for
supply and conversion; and (2) to make an inventory of existing standards,
procedures and methods which are used to characterize biomass, and to
identify white spots regarding the availability of standards for all desired
properties. This information could become a basis for a database on biomass
properties. 4 figs., 6 tabs., 62 refs.
