Abstract:
This report covers how vitrified MSWI (municipal solid waste incinerator)fly ash is judged in different countries according to their respective
regulations and regulatory test procedures with respect to leaching. The MSWI
ash has been produced by the Vitroarc process developed by Scanarc (Sweden)
in cooperation with Kvaerner (Norway). In this work current regulatory test
procedures in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy have been carried out on
selected samples from the previous study. Limit values for beneficial
application of vitrified materials are operational in the Netherlands, they
are not yet available or in preparation in other countries in Europe. In
spite of this, it can be concluded that the leaching properties of the
vitrified slag all fall below the most stringent regulations for landfill.
Only for the Swiss regulation Cu, Ni and Ba are slightly exceeding or close
to the limit. Based on the material properties it can be regarded as
potentially applicable in construction applications provided it meets the
technical specifications for a certain envisaged application. 11 refs.
