Abstract:
ECN has carried out a wind measuring campaign and subsequent windpotential analysis at 3 sites in Belgium, Brussels. The sites are situated in
the South Eastern part of Belgium. The terrain orography in the region can be
characterised as complex with respect to wind energy applications.
Measurements have been performed at the sites Coo, Buetgenbach and Amel. Wind
data (wind speed and wind direction) have been measured at two different
levels, i.e. 20 m and 31-32 m. The aim was to determine the long-term wind
regime at the sites in view of future wind energy applications. The short
term measurements at the sites have been correlated with simultaneous data
from a nearby meteorological station, i.e. the KM (Royal Meteorological
Institute in Belgium) station nr. 496 at the military base at Eisenborn.
Based on the results, the wind energy potential at the sites has been
estimated by calculating the expected annual energy output of a number of
selected commercial wind turbines in the range of 400 kW to 1.65 MW. 2 refs.
