Abstract:
To ensure a reliable, trouble-free operation of coal or biomass-fired(advanced) thermal conversion processes within stringent environmental
constraints, it is becoming increasingly important to know the fate of a
broad range of chemical elements in the installation. Not only the major
elements are of concern, but also minor and trace elements like alkali,
alkaline earth and heavy metals. To know the fate of these (trace) elements,
it is important to quantify and characterise all material streams going in
and out of the system. In other words, element-balances over the system
should be made. In this study, an updated general approach for making these
element-balances is proposed. Subsequently, this approach is applied to the
Pressurised Fluidized Bed Gasifier of the Delft University of Technology. 7
