Abstract:
The mass transfer of hydrogen in the simplified Johnson Matthey membranemodule is modelled in order to increase the understanding of the mass
transfer characteristics of the module. The computational fluid dynamical
software package CFDS-FLOW3D is used for this purpose. The Johnson Matthey
module is simplified in the model as two coaxial cylinders representing the
annular flow of feed gas and the pipe flow of sweep gas. Both flows are
countercurrent and are separated by the membrane. Atmospheric temperature and
pressure, and binary gas mixtures are assumed in the simplified membrane
module. The modelling results demonstrate the strong coupling between
hydrodynamics and the hydrogen separation performance of the module. 6 refs.
