Abstract:
The room temperature mechanical properties of Al2O3-SiC hot pressedcomposites containing 5-25 vol.% of three different SiC powders, in the shape
of fine particles, platelets and short fibres, have been investigated. X-ray
diffraction, optical microscopy and SEM were used for phase analysis and
microstructural examination of the samples. The mechanical properties were
related to the microstructural examination of the composites. The composite
reinforced with 20 vol.% SiC platelet revealed the highest fracture
toughness, 6.4 MPa.m"1"/2, and bending strength, 517 MPa. 2 figs., 3 tabs.,
