Abstract:
The techno-economic feasibility of a waste heat driven solid sorptionbased chemical heat transformer for application in industrial processes is established. The amount of industrial waste heat in The Netherlands in the temperature window 50-200°C is about 110 PJ per year. A chemical heat transformer based on the reversible synthesis and decomposition of the ammoniates of MnSO4 and NiCl2 is able to upgrade waste heat of about 150°C to middle pressure steam of 240°C and 33 bara with an efficiency of 33%. Based on a thermal design of a 5 MW semi-continuous system an economic analysis is performed. The pay-out time is typically shorter than 5 years and the energy saving costs as well as the CO2 reduction costs are negative, i.e. MP-steam generated with a chemical heat transformer is cheaper than generating the same commodity with a conventional gas-fired boiler.
