Abstract:
ECN developed a batch technology for the deposition of CdS layers on CuInS2-coated glass beads. The CuInS2 beads were further processed to solar cells in order to evaluate the IV-characteristics. In order to get acquainted with the deposition process beside of CuInS2 glass beads also bare glass beads have been added to the deposition reaction. The CdS coatings are characterized by optical measurements and chemical dissolution of the layers; thereby focusing on the morphology, layer composition and layer thickness. The optical data were fitted using a thin film approach and calculating the effective CdS layer thickness on glass beads by using a simple approximation. A linear relationship was found between the thickness values determined by the optical and chemical method. Currently, the optical method gives the most probable results. For the layers a Cd/S ratio of 1,1 and a bandgap of 2.40±0.03 eV were determined. It has been shown, that for the completed SUNRISE cells the measured Voc-values are directly related to the properties of the CdS layer on bare glass beads. A uniform and closed layer on glass beads delivers the highest (max. 573mV) and most reproducible Voc-values.
