Abstract:
The relationship between alumina powder characteristics and therheological properties of water based suspensions and their influence on the degree of densification and mechanical properties of complex shaped alumina ceramics has been studied. A series of alumina powders were used to test the influence of mono- and bimodal powders on the relative viscosity of water based suspensions using agarose as a binder and glycerol as a lubricant. The highest solids loading, up to 54 vol.%, was obtained for the suspension based on the bimodal A15 SG alumina powder. The alumina ceramics shaped by low pressure injection moulding from the suspension with 50 vol.% of A15 SG powder were characterized by good mechanical strength in the green dry phase, low drying and firing shrinkage, high degree of densification and bending strength of approximately 250 MPa. 5 figs., 4 tabs., 22 refs.
