Presented at: European Wind Energy Conference 2003, Madrid, Spain, 16-19 juni 2003.

Abstract:
The question to be answered by the WISE project is whether commerciallyavailable SODARs can be used for power performance measurements on wind turbines. At present the main problem with SODAR is insufficient accuracy of the wind speed measurements for wind energy applications. Two models of SODARs have been tested by ECN. The data gathered during a 15-months measuring period, where the SODAR is placed next to a 200m high meteorological mast, has been evaluated. In addition, calibration procedures were executed and reported. The conclusions of the presentation given at the European Wind Energy Conference 2003 are: - SODAR is not "plug and play" technology: expertise is needed to obtain high quality data for power performance measurements; - Differences between tower and SODAR measurements depend on SODAR type and settings, measurement height and wether conditions; - Calibration of the SODAR is not yet a solution. Despite the results shown in this presentation, the partners in the WISE project see sufficient potential in the SODAR to continue research and try to find methods and techniques to be able to use the SODAR for: - power performance measurements, - measurements in complex terrain and - measurements under offshore conditions.
