Abstract:
Emitter wrap-through solar cells are looked upon as one possiblecandidate for future next generation crystalline silicon solar cells. It has the advantage of zero shadow losses, easier module interconnection with both contacts on the back and improved collection efficiency by the backside emitter. Although the principal concept and the possible advantages are known for some decades, there is no commercial product using emitter wrap-through solar cells available. To assess the potential and to discover the problems of a possible industrial production are the aims of our project. In this paper the developments in improving the EWT cell technology are described both theoretically using 2D-simulations and experimentally. A special focus was on the backside passivation of the cells which appeared to be a crucial limiting factor for both fill factor and open-circuit voltage. 11 refs.
