Abstract:
The cost-effectiveness of long-term options for energy crops and biomassconversion in the Netherlands is analysed in a dynamic MARKAL model for the Dutch energy system for the period 2000-2040. The study analyses the costs and benefits for biomass supply and conversion options in different scenarios under consideration of competing technologies. The impact of CO2 reduction on the cost-effectiveness of biomass options is also analysed. The results show that biomass options can supply a significant part of the national energy demand. Especially at higher CO2 reduction targets, many biomass options become cost effective. Industrial CHP (combined generation of power and heat) and co-combustion in electric power plants seem the most promising options, while space heating and methanol production become attractive at higher CO2 emission reduction goals. Concerning the supply side, waste biomass flows and import of biomass seem more attractive options than energy crops in the Netherlands for the short term.
