Abstract:
This report presents an environmental life cycle assessment of a STAG
(STeam And Gas turbine) and an ICGCC (lntegrated Coal Gasification
Combined Cycle) power plant. The aim of this investigation is to determine
environmental aspects of carbon dioxide removal and storage.
Shortcomings of the followed procedure for life cycle assessments are
pinpointed in the field of the software package, the inventory and the normalization of effect scores for classification as well as evaluation.
Application of carbon dioxide removal and storage results in a considerable
decrease (average 80%) of the contribution to the greenhouse effect caused
by STAG or ICGCC. In contrast, the remaining environmental impacts
increase, varying from about 15 to 115% for STAG and 10 to 70% for
ICGCC. After normalization of effectscores the increase in fuel use per TWh
electricity production appeared tobe the main factor.
