Abstract:
In this inventory study the potential for generating sustainable energy along a motorway is discussed. Several technologies and possible applications are enumerated. This includes wind turbines, photo-voltaic systems, heat-collectors, biomass, piezo-electricity and Peltier elements. It is concluded (but not exclusively) that the application of smaller turbines, light and transparent amorphous solar cells as well as the growth of biomass bear an advantageous perspective for the (near) future. Attention should be paid to the potential of the ‘integral concept’ in which several techniques are combined.
