Abstract:
The design of a device that measures the nuclide specific activity inhigh level radioactive waste containers, and also visually inspects this
container, is described. The device, called VINISH (Visual Inspection and
Nuclide Identification System for High level radioactive waste), can handle
waste containers with activities up to 10 TBq. The nuclide specific activity
of each container is reconstructed from the measurements of the spectrum of
the gamma radiation and calculations of the detection efficiency. The problem
of the expected high count rates on the detector has been coped by means of:
(1) providing distance between detector and source; (2) placement of two
collimators and heavy shielding in front of the detector; and (3) special
high count rate electronics. The design has been optimised by use of Monte
Carlo calculations. 2 refs.
